| Portraits
I have been making portraits in pencil for eight years. I am fascinated by the power and nuance of facial expression. After approximately 300 portrait sessions, and countless quick sketches of people at different events, my perceptions of who I was drawing began to morph. Capturing the likeness of the individual became secondary to observing the person they were on the inside compared to what they looked like on the outside. I then did a series of conceptual portrait drawings, and composed them using a grid format I had invented for my painting work. This was my breakthrough. It was another short step to finally bring my portrait work into the medium of my heart, the flowing brushwork and patina of paint. I have only begun experimenting with incorporating my portrait observations into conceptual paintings. These are reflective pieces that have to do with introspection, self-awareness and perception of the individual. I am interested in visually representing the dichotomy of these ideas. My goal is to make the images compelling and open to interpretation on several levels. I am excited to explore this this as a series to see how far I can take it.
